UMaine Symposium 

Award Amounts

Academic Year CUGR Fellowship Awards

Undergraduate students are only able to be awarded up to $3,000 during their undergraduate career. For example: If you have won a Summer Fellowship at $3,000 (or higher) you are unable to win another undergraduate fellowship or research experience through CUGR or MSGC. This includes AI and Medicine.

CUGR AY Fellowship Important Dates and Deadlines:

  • Proposal submission Opens: Wednesday, September 1, 2021
  • Proposal Submission Deadline: Friday, October 15, 2021
  • Performance period pending completion of the CUGR student contract: November 1, 2021 – May 1, 2022.
    *Expenditures after May 1, 2022, will not be reimbursed.
  • The final report is due: May 13, 2022

Responsible Conduct of Research Workshop Requirement:

Undergraduate students funded by a CUGR Fellowship award are required to complete Responsible Conduct of Research training.

Workshop Dates: TBA

  • Students are responsible for making arrangements to attend the training workshop to fulfill the terms of this contract.
  • If you have already completed this training send your certificate to cugr@maine.edu as soon as possible.
  • Please register as soon as possible. Pre-registration is required (walk-ins will NOT be accepted) and students must register their mentor for the training. To register, please complete the Fall 2021 Undergraduate RCR registration form. Please note, registrants will need valid @maine.edu credentials to access the form. Students must list their mentor; the mentor will be registered automatically and may be asked to attend. Please note that this training does not satisfy the graduate RCR.
  • The training is valid for four years; it is not an annual requirement.
  • If you need assistance with registration please contact Sandra Tijerina (sandra.c.tijerina@maine.edu).
  • Questions about the federal training requirement may be directed to Sandra Tijerina (sandra.c.tijerina@maine.edu).
  • If the student is unable to attend the workshop, another opportunity to complete the training will be provided within the following semester.

Award Funding/Payment Information for CUGR AY Fellowships:

  • Funds are distributed per your budget justification provided at the time of project submission.
  • If you would like to make a change to your budget justification it must be done in writing to cugr@maine.edu before your award student contract is completed.
  • If you have chosen to use the full award amount ($1500.00*) as a single fellowship payment it will be divided in half.
  • If you have chosen a partial award payout that will be sent out to you soon after you have completed the student contract, W9 (W8 if necessary), and vendor form.
  • If you chose to use some of the fellowship funds for supplies, travel, etc. please work with your mentor and department to arrange for those supplies and travel to be purchased and scheduled.
  • All terms of this contract must be fulfilled by the determined deadlines or the student award recipient may be required to return the monetary funds and the fellowship may be terminated. If you have any questions or concerns contact Melinda Pelletier, Program Manager, CUGR@maine.edu.

  • The W-9 needs to be completed regardless of the previous completion and/or receipt of W-9, W-2, W-4 (even if you were or are a student employee at UMaine you need to complete a new one)

UMaine Student Symposium 

All award winners are required to present their research results at the 2022 UMaine Student Symposium, which will be held on April 15, 2022. Award recipients are required to submit an abstract to the UMaine Student Symposium during the designated “Call for Abstracts”. This is separate from the abstract submitted for this Fellowship award, though students can use the exact same abstract if desired. Announcements will be made in the Fall and Spring CUGR newsletters as well as on the CUGR website and social media platforms. Please fill out the required information in this contract before electronically submitting it.

Summer CUGR Fellowships

CUGR Summer Fellowship Important Dates and Deadlines:

  • Summer Fellowship Proposal deadline:  Thursday, February 17, 2022 by 5:00 pm
  • Performance period: Sunday, May 1, 2022 – Friday, August 26, 2022
  • Summer final report deadline: Friday, September 16, 2022 by 5:00 p.m.
  • Submit CUGR Summer Fellowship Proposals: CUGR Summer 2022
  • Faculty Commitment Letter: Summer22

  • Facilitate the development of a liaison between researchers at the University of Maine and one of NASA’s centers, and
  • Facilitate technology transfer from the University of Maine to industry.

  • Deadline for MSGC AY Undergraduate Applications: Friday, October 15, 2021 by 5:00 p.m.
  • Submit a proposal for MSGC Graduate Students: at MSGC 31
  • Deadline for MSGC Graduate Applications: Friday, October 15, 2021
